Welcome to “Did You Know?”, a series of United Way facts and trivia! A lot of people in the community, even United Way supporters, may not always know exactly how the process works. Each week, we’ll post a new fun fact about United Way to help you understand exactly how it works and where the money goes.

  • 99c of every dollar donated to United Way stays local. Only 1% goes to United Way Worldwide, which does not fund any agencies, but serves as a resource for local United Ways. (8/14/15)
  • You can choose where your United Way donation goes: designate to any county in the U.S. or to a specific partner agency. You decide where your gift can have the most impact. (8/21/15)
  • All funding decisions at United Way are made by either the donor (by designating your gift) or by Funds Distribution volunteers. Neither our staff nor any other organizations decide where your money goes! Funds Distribution Volunteers meet in each county to review the agencies applying for funding in their county and make decisions about how the funds can best be used in that community. (8/28/15)
  • The Average Gift to United Way of NE MS is $3.45 per week – less than the cost of a fast food meal. (9/4/15)
  • Each United Way is independent and makes its own funding decisions. Your donation never goes to fund agencies outside of our area. Only the 66 partner agencies we serve receive any of our funds. (9/11/15)
  • United Way does the research for you: Each agency goes through a rigorous certification and review process before receiving any United Way funding. You can rest assured that your gift is going to an organization that is financially sound and that is making an impact on our community. (9/18/15)

  • Each year, United Way participates in the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program by scheduling appointments for clients to receive FREE tax preparation if they meet certain guidelines. United Way will begin taking calls for VITA appointments on January 4, 2016. (12/4/15)
