United Way of Northeast Mississippi is grateful to the 140 volunteers from our 7 counties that are a part of the funds distribution process. Each year from December through March they meet, visit with the agencies, meet again and then decide the best way for the monies raised to be divided among the 65 agencies.

For Volunteers inside Lee County:

Attend training meeting to receive Funds Distribution manual and to review interview process. Prepare for agency interviews by reading agency information, studying agency requests, and formulating specific questions for the agency.

Visit agency locations to become acquainted with the services they provide.

Attend agency interviews to review proposed budgets and to ask any questions. Discuss with other panel members funding recommendations. Agencies may be funded at the level requested, at a level less than requested or not at all if there is not sufficient need in the community or if the agency is not fiscally or programmatically accountable.

Attend Fund Distribution final meeting ready to participate in making agency allocation recommendations to the United Way Board. Funding is completed when all funds raised in the county have been allocated.

For Volunteers Outside Lee County:

In December, attend a one hour training session to receive your Funds Distribution manual and to review interview process. Prepare for agency interviews by reading agency information, studying agency requests, and formulating specific questions for the agency.

In January, attend half day agency interviews to review and discuss proposed agency funding requests and budgets. Be sure all your questions are answered. Do not let agencies monopolize the interview time. After the interviews, meet with panel members to decide funding recommendations. Return your panel’s Agency Funding Recommendation Sheets to UW Funds Distribution Director for spreadsheet preparation for final meeting.

In February, attend a two hour final meeting to participate in making agency funding recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. Agencies may be funded at the level requested, at a level less than requested or not at all if there is not sufficient need in the community or if the agency is not fiscally or programmatically accountable. Funding is completed when all funds raised in the county have been allocated.

Earlier today I was came across a post on a new favorite blog,studerteam.com, called 25 rules for Mothers of Sons… and since I have 2 amazing sons I read on… All the “rules” are great; teach him manners, teach him how to do laundry, read with him, etc. but one really stuck out at me. It actually should be something we teach sons and daughters… As United Way corporate partners, volunteer, agencies and staff we all know the importance of helping others… but as adults do we make it a priority to teach our children to see the opportunities… here it is:

16. Give him opportunities to help others There is a big difference in giving someone the opportunity to help and forcing someone to help. Giving the opportunity lights a flame in the heart and once the help is done the flame shines brighter and asks for more opportunities. Be an example of helping others in your own actions and the way your family helps each other and helps others together.

Give your sons and daughters the opportunity to DO MORE!!
